TATTOO AFTERCARE

Option 1- Second Skin*

* Not recommended for individuals with adhesive sensitivities.

  • I will apply a second skin after we've completed your tattoo to help protect the area as it heals.

    • Duration: I recommend leaving the second skin on for 3-4 days; however, it can be left on safely for up to 6 days if necessary.

    • Allergic Reaction: If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, remove the second skin immediately under running water. Then, follow Aftercare Option 2 for further instructions.

    • Showering: It’s perfectly fine to shower with the second skin on, but avoid soaking it in water (such as in baths, hot tubs, or swimming).

    • Do Not Pick or Pull: Resist the urge to pick or pull at the second skin. Allow it to naturally come off on its own.

    • Removing the Second Skin: When it’s time to remove the second skin, do so gently in the shower. Start by carefully lifting up a corner, and then slowly and gently stretch the corner away from itself. This process should be like removing a sticky hook from a wall.

    • What to Expect: As you remove the second skin, you may notice ink and dry skin on the underside. This is completely normal — it’s just excess ink and dead skin cells.

    • Post-Removal Care: Once the second skin is off, keep your tattoo clean and dry. Follow Aftercare Option 2 for the next steps and continue those instructions for the next 2 weeks to ensure optimal healing.

Option 2- Cling Wrap

  • Cling Wrap: Leave the cling wrap on for approximately 2 hours after your tattoo session.

  • Hand Hygiene: Always wash your hands thoroughly before removing the cling wrap.

  • Cleaning: Using cool water, gently wash the tattooed area with a mild, fragrance-free soap.

  • Drying: Pat the area dry with a clean towel or paper towel — do not rub.

  • Moisturising: Your tattoo will be tender for the first 3 days or so. Apply the tattoo balm sparingly — once in the morning and once at night is usually sufficient. I recommend Dr. Pickles (available at in studio or at Woolworths)

  • Nighttime Care: If your tattoo causes discomfort during the first few nights, you may apply cling wrap over it while you sleep. Be sure the balm is fully absorbed before wrapping. Remove the wrap first thing in the morning, gently wash the tattoo, pat it dry, and allow it to air before reapplying the ointment.

  • Peeling & Flaking: Around day 4, your tattoo may start to feel tight and itchy as the top layer of skin begins to flake and peel. This is completely normal! Do not pick at it, as this can affect the final appearance of your tattoo. During this time, you can apply the aftercare cream a little more frequently, but still only in small amounts.

  • Water & Sweat: Avoid swimming and soaking your tattoo in water (e.g., baths, hot tubs) for 2 weeks. Showering is fine, just avoid direct, prolonged water exposure.
Additionally, avoid intense exercise that causes excessive sweating for at least 1 week.

  • Clothing & Sun Exposure: Avoid wearing tight clothing/ jewellery etc that may rub against the tattooed area. Also, keep your tattoo out of the sun and avoid fake tanning the area during the healing process.

  • Healing Time: Your tattoo should be fully healed within 2-4 weeks. After this period, you can resume your usual activities.
